Frequently Asked Questions About Our Health and Safety Training Courses

When it comes to deciding how many first aiders you need, it is important to conduct a first aid needs assessment and consider a number of factors. In doing so, you will consider the resources, equipment and facilities needs. As part of deciding how many first aiders you need, you will consider such areas as the size and layout of your workplace, the number of employees, the location of the workplace relative to accessing local emergency services, existing health conditions, non-employees, demographic details, including whether there are children and infants present, work arrangements, such as those remote, lone working and travelling workers.
Additional to this, it is important you ensure there is sufficient coverage, in the event of absence, sickness and annual leave. As this is unique to your work environment, it is advised that you give our competent Health and Safety Consultants a call. We will support you through this process and guide you through the course of conducting your first aid needs assessment.
If you would like training on conducting a first aid needs assessment, this is covered in our Appointed Person training.

In 2024, the HSE published an amendment to their First Aid at Work: Guidance on Regulations Series L74, placing emphasis on the need for employers to consider mental health as part of their first aid needs. As part of this, it is important to ensure that you assess the risks relating to mental health and include this as part of your needs assessment. For further guidance on this please give us a call.

Whilst there is no requirement to document your first aid needs assessment, we advise that you do. A documented first aid needs assessment will help you to justify your decision-making process. Further to this, it will help you in reviewing your provision, monitor when changes occur, an incident occurs, or annually as good practice. If you would like a template to conduct your assessment please contact us directly, and we can support you with this.
